In Your Own Words began as a community focused project with the objective of using chance to drive outcomes. We began by selecting four places in Detroit at random, visited and researched these seemingly unrelated places, and came to conclude that each place was comforting but cloaked by uncertainty. This dichotomy led to a project aimed at making the weary confident.

We designed and distributed cards featuring six stereotyped places in Detroit. These employed our project’s message and provoked people to make their own contributions to our website. On the site people take action and submit personal anecdotes relating to their own unique experiences with unjustly stereotyped places. The collected responses will be displayed online where people can search and uncover places they previously might not have considered exploring.
